From Old French 'aventure,' meaning 'chance, luck, or a happening,' which derived from Latin 'adventura,' the future participle of 'advenire,' meaning 'to arrive' or 'to come to' (from 'ad-' meaning 'to' and 'venire' meaning 'to come'). It entered Middle English in the 13th century, initially meaning a chance event or risk before shifting toward the sense of exciting experience.
