Why can’t I just swap in any synonym?
Few synonyms are exact. Words differ in strength (annoyed vs furious), formality (buy vs purchase), connotation (thrifty vs stingy) and grammar (you are “afraid of” something but “frightened by” it). That is why the in-context tool reads your whole sentence before suggesting replacements.
What is the difference between synonyms and “related words”?
Synonyms can replace the word with roughly the same meaning. Related words share a topic or idea but are not substitutes; they are useful when you are searching for the right word rather than replacing one.
Where do the synonym lists come from?
Lists come from the Datamuse API, which combines WordNet (Princeton University’s lexical database) with statistics from real text. The in-context suggestions are written by an AI model that reads your sentence.
What is an antonym?
A word with the opposite meaning. Some pairs are gradable (hot / cold, with warm in between), some are complementary (alive / dead), and some are relational (buy / sell).
